We have a very soft spot for the sparkle, elegance and wit of these ASMF performances of the Rossini String Sonatas amazingly accomplished products for a twelve-year-old. Marriner offers them on full orchestral strings but with such finesse and precision of ensemble that the result is all gain. The 1966 recording still sounds remarkably full and natural, and the current CD transfer adds to the feeling of presence. The new Double Decca format has other music added. Apart from the Donizetti Quartet, which has an appropriately Rossinian flavor, the two minor concertante works are well worth having, with Barry Tuckwell (in what is in essence a three-movement horn concertino) and Roger Lord in excellent form.
