Laurie McVay decided to be a blues singer at the age of seven, when he heard Jose Feliciano perform the old standard, Going to Chicago Blues. Throughout his life he has worked to perfect his craft, to the point where he is now recognised as one of Britain's leading blues singers and songwriters.
East Side Blues is Laurie's second album, following his successful debut, My Kind of Blues. The title is a sly nod to one of his heroes, Magic Sam, and old blues references (from Slim Harpo to Sonny Boy Williamson to Bobby Bland) are woven into the fabric of the album. But this is modern, soulful blues, performed with a core, modern five piece band. The songs characterise the human condition, focused on themes of loss, belonging and the struggle to get by, on the day-by-day. But East Side Blues is ultimately a joyous album, which reflects the power of the blues to help us 'keep on keeping on'.
