Juan Medrano Cotito ha desarrollado una carrera muy vasta como cantautor e intérprete del cajón peruano. Es una de esas figuras emblemáticas en el universo de la música afroperuana actual y su nombre aparece en muchos de los principales ensambles de fusión con ritmos negros (de Susana Baca a Novalima). Cotito ha recorrido escenarios de todo el mundo, llevando su música y sus conocimientos sobre el cajón, el cual comparte en escuelas y universidades.
“Hechicero”, su nuevo álbum y segundo volumen de la colección “Perspectivas de la Música Afroperuana”, es un ingreso hacia las fuentes de la tradición afro. Es un álbum celebratorio, que invoca a Manuel Vásquez, Eusebio Sirio y Julio Algendones, los tres grandes cajoneros peruanos que aquí son homenajeados en sendas composiciones que parten de una base instrumental de cajón, chekere, quijada, cajita, campana, congas, bongó, guitarra y bajo, en una poderosa y exuberante interacción rítmica, que da la esencia del estilo de Cotito y que presenta el genuino sonido afroperuano a través del Festejo, Son de los Diablos y la Zamacueca.
En “Hechicero” desfilan estampas, memorias, motivos y personajes de la cultura afroperuana, que son cantados, haciendo de éste un álbum que habla sobre su propia historia. Una historia que se cuenta a través del ritmo. (Luis Alvarado)
HISTORIA DE LOS RITMOS
Ha sido un verdadero privilegio descubrir el talento de compositor de Juan Medrano Cotito, y digo esto casi en estado de asombro porque nos conocemos desde hace muchísimos años, cuando su sonido único en el cajón ya tenía un sello y una voz inconfundible. Sin embargo a pesar de los años transcurridos, nunca tuvimos la oportunidad de trabajar juntos en un disco suyo hasta ahora, y hoy “Hechicero” es parte de la colección “Perspectivas de la Música Afroperuana”.
En verdad le debo este “descubrimiento” a mi hijo Daniel, productor asociado de este proyecto. Cuando empezamos a trabajar juntos para analizar cómo deberíamos enfocar el concepto de una colección de música afroperuana, algo que nos sorprendió es que en toda la discografía del aporte afroperuano, no había un disco que resaltara de manera específica la gran diversidad de ritmos que existen en esta tradición. Ante la pregunta de quién era el músico afroperuano que tuviera el talento, el sonido único y la capacidad de armar y dirigir temas específicos para que el ritmo brille con luz propia dentro de composiciones nuevas; la voz del cajón de Cotito apareció ante nosotros. Nos reunimos con él y nos pidió tres meses para armar el proyecto.
Daniel y yo le trasmitimos nuestra pasión por los ritmos afroperuanos y nuestra intención de llevar esta colección hacia lugares insospechados de la mano con Buh Records, la compañía discográfica de música de vanguardia que dirige Luis Alvarado. Pasaron los tres meses y Cotito nos convocó a escuchar por primera vez el material que había compuesto para la colección.
De pronto empezamos a escuchar una música que transmitía una vitalidad esencial, una fuerza cargada de tradición y que al mismo tiempo sonaba fresca y nueva en el sentido de aportar homenajes a grandes músicos de la tradición afroperuana y letras que evocaban mucho respeto y sentimiento al legado de sus raíces. Así, el tema “Hechicero” que encabeza el tracklist y que además da nombre al disco, es un homenaje a Julio "Chocolate" Algendones, composición de una compleja estructura rítmica y armónica sorprendente. Igual ocurre con “Homenaje a Mangüé”, otro sentido homenaje al gran percusionista vuelto a nacer en este tema y finalmente, el homenaje a Eusebio Sirio “Pititi” -para algunos estudiosos- el más virtuoso de todos nuestros cajoneros, en la voz de Marco Campos. Otros de mis favoritos de este disco son “Ronda de Tondero”, “Zamacueca”y “Festejo de Ritmo”.
A través de “Hechicero”, Juan Medrano Cotito cuenta la historia del swing, de la alegría, de la tradición y del humor afroperuano y esperamos que el mundo entero despierte finalmente al poder irresistible de este legado. (Manongo Mujica - Productor Musical)

Juan Medrano Cotito has developed a very prolific career as a singer-songwriter and performer of the Peruvian cajón. He is one of the emblematic figures in the world of Afro-Peruvian music today and his name appears in many of the main fusion ensembles that have lead way in the exploration of black rhythms in Peru (from Susana Baca to Novalima). Cotito has traveled around the world, sharing his music and knowledge of the cajón in schools and universities.
"Hechicero", his new album, and the second volume of the collection “Perspectives on Afro-Peruvian Music”, is an entry into the sources of the Afro tradition. It is a celebratory album, which invokes Manuel Vásquez, Eusebio Sirio and Julio Algendones, the three great Peruvian cajoneros who are honored here in separate compositions based on the instrumental mixture of cajón, chekere, jawbone, cajita, bell, congas, bongo, guitar and bass, in powerful and exuberant rhythmic interaction which makes up the essence of Cotito's style, and at the same time presents the genuine Afro-Peruvian sound: Festejo, Son de los Diablos and Zamacueca.
In "Hechicero" we are treated to a parade of vignettes, memories, motifs and characters of the Afro-Peruvian culture, which are sung, making this an album that speaks about its own history. A story that is told through rhythm. (Luis Alvarado)
A HISTORY OF RHYTHMS
It has been a real privilege to discover the talent of composer Juan Medrano Cotito, and I say this almost in a state of amazement because as far as I can remember -and we have known each other for many, many years- his cajón sound always had a unique style and unmistakable voice. However, despite the decades that have passed, we never had the opportunity to work together on an album of his own until now, and today "Hechicero" [Sorcerer] is part of the collection "Perspectives on Afro-Peruvian Music".
I really owe this "discovery" to my son Daniel, the associate producer of this project. When we started working together, analysing how we should approach the concept of a collection of Afro-Peruvian music, something that surprised us was that throughout the discography of the Afro-Peruvian contribution, there was not a single record that specifically highlighted the great diversity of rhythms that exists in this tradition. This led us to ask ourselves which Afro-Peruvian musician might have the talent, the unique sound and the ability to assemble and conduct specific pieces, that would ensure these traditional rhythms to shine with their own light within new compositions; the voice of Cotito's cajón suddenly popped up in our mind. We met with him and he asked us for three months to put together the project.
Daniel and I told him about our passion for Afro-Peruvian rhythms and our intention to take this collection to unsuspected places hand in hand with Buh Records, the avant-garde music label directed by Luis Alvarado. The three months passed and Cotito summoned us to listen for the first time to the material he had composed for the collection.
Suddenly we began to listen to a music that transmitted an essential vitality, a force fueled by tradition that at the same time sounded fresh and new, in the sense of paying homage to great musicians of the Afro-Peruvian heritage and also contributing lyrics that evoked great respect and emotion toward the legacy of its roots. Thus, the song "Hechicero" that begins the tracklist and also gives name to the album, is a tribute to the famous percussionist Julio "Chocolate" Algendones: it is a composition that features complex and surprising structures, both rhythmically and harmonically. The same happens with "Homage to Mangüé", another tribute to this great percussionist, who appears to be brought back to life in this track, and finally, the homage to Eusebio Sirio "Pititi" –the most virtuoso of all our cajoneros according to some scholars- in the voice of Marco Campos. My other favorite tracks on this album are "Ronda de Tondero", "Zamacueca" and "Festejo de Ritmo".
Through "Hechicero", Juan Medrano Cotito tells the story of Afro-Peruvian swing, joy, tradition and humor, and we hope the whole world will finally wake up to the irresistible power of this legacy. (Manongo Mujica - Music Producer).
