Library music was released exclusively to the media industry for use in TV documentaries and drama. 'Le Jazz Beat' (jerk, jazz & psycchobeat) is a retrospective of Eddie Warner's French library label 'L'illustration Musicale'. Considering the label produced 26 albums during it's lifetime, one wonders why the CD has a rather ungenerous running time of 35 minutes? Warner's compositions, though satisfyingly funky and heaving with break beats, lose much of their impact when heard in one sitting. The comp would have benefited from a greater diversity of moods and artists. Welcome relief from the pounding onslaught is the 'sinister, tenative synthesiser movement' titled 'Zone Y'. 'Come' features some husky groovy scat from an unnamed female singer. Roger Morris' instrumentation on 'Hard Labour' includes brass and bluesy piano. Otherwise it's fierce pounding all the way. If that's what you want then 'Le Jazz Beat' is a must purchase.
