It was seven years ago, that I played together with Jeroen and Pascal for the first time. In Spain. Castelló démpuries, an evening square at eleven o’clock. Summertime. Fantastic musicians. Open, sensitive, adventurous. With these men I wanted to create beautiful music.
Erwin was the saxophone player I was looking for. Intuitive, beyond thinking. A wonderfully deep tone, straight from the heart.
A musical idea was created instantaneously. The sound, acoustic by nature. I needed a different instrument myself. Something resembling a double bass, and a fretless bass guitar. A bass sound that would mix perfectly with piano: A six stringed semi acoustic bass guitar. Piet Visser built the bass. “we’ll throw it in the fire, if it turns out badly”, Piet said. It turned out well.
I have my own studio. I do not divert from it much. This recording, however, required a sublime grand piano. Fattoria Musica has one. The sound studio is situated on a hill in Osnabruck. It’s quiet there. Very quiet. Often, during recording, I do the technique myself. For this album, I decided to let someone else do that. I could focus entirely on playing. Chris Weeda thought alongside us, played alongside us. Udo quartet stella art toi blue-yellow toned +blur (1 of 1)
I can honestly say, that this feels like a personal album. A mark in my career. The first album I have produced and shaped myself: from start to finish. Hence, by way of exception: my own name on the cover.
I would like to add some words for my listener. But which words? If I were to write something about this music, I would have to start thinking about it. I enjoy thinking about music, but I do not enjoy thinking about my own creations. The only words I can say are: It’s here.
