David Popper, who died in 1913, was considered the Pablo Casals of his day, a cellist of mesmerizing virtuosity.
The once wildly popular cello pieces that he composed for his own use might, in lesser hands than Starker`s, be dismissed as musically empty bonbons, faded relics of the salon era.
But Starker dispatches them with such characterful authority and style as to make each of the 20 pieces gleam like a small gem. He, and they, are a delight to listen to.
The cellist considers himself Popper`s ''cellistic grandson,'' having studied with Adolf Schiffer, who was a Popper pupil.
The aristocratic playing on this well-recorded CD attests to the truth of his assertion.
