Massimiliano Martinelli is an Italian cellist who distinguishes himself by a flawless instrumental technique and his typical expressiveness – for all which love the world of the opera and the theatre.

The versatile cellist works since several years as a soloist, first cellist in orchestra and professor for cello. He debuts as a soloist on occasion of the Ravenna festival in 2007 with “Concerto Grosso per tre violoncelli e orchestra” of Krzysztof Penderecki with Enrico Bronzi accompanied from the “orchestra giovanile italiana (OGI)” under the direction of Penderecki. Since that time, he performed numerous concerts in Europe and Asia performing the most important pieces of the cello literature accompanied from different orchestras like “l’Orchestra di Roma e del Lazio”, “Orchestra Cherubini”, “Orchestra Giovanile Italiana”, “Yuvaskula Sinfonia (Finland)”, “Sinfonia Roma”, “Gyeongnam Simphony (Korea)”, “Sinfonieorchester Basel (Switzerland)” and “Hokkaido Young Philarmony (Japan)”.

At the age of 23, he has been appointed principal cellist by maestro Riccardo Muti for the “Cherubini Orchestra” and he keeps this role for 3 years performing several concert tours in Switzerland, Malta, Russia, Spain, Austria and Italy and playing in well-known concert halls, among others the “Wiener Musikverein”. Afterwards he wins the audition in the “Teatro Comunale di Bologna”, where he played as first cello till 2008. In 2010 he is chosen by the maestro Daniele Gatti as first solo cellist of the opera-house in Zürich. There he remains active till 2016. In 2017 he has been invited as a guest principal cellist from “Teatro alla Scala” in Milano.

As a professor for cello he starts in 2010 with training courses about the realization methods of the opera and symphony orchestra at the University Zürich. He teaches cello in different Italian universities of music, in the Konservatorium in Zürich and in various summer education courses.

In 2016 he plays as soloist in the Sapporo Sun Plaza Hall with the Hokkaido University orchestra and at the same time gives Masterclass with his wife, the cellist Fulvia Mancini. Together with her he founds Mr&Mrs Cello, a duo that is staying true to the mission of spreading classical-pop music to younger generations with “Einaudi Transcription” project. The Cello duo has been tought at the Music University “Toscanini” in Italy and as artist of Halidon music has recorded the Albums Crossover One and Two avalaible online and by the stores.

In 2019 Mr&Mrs Cello get a special award from the “1. Vienna International Chamber music competition.”

Massimiliano is born in Apulia and studies in the “Accademia di Santa Cecilia” in Rom in the class of Francesco Strano. Afterwards he studies in Basel under the direction of Ivan Monighetti where he learns the Russian school of Rostropovich. Strongly he is influenced from Enrico Bronzi, Renato Zanettovich and Dario de Rosa for the chamber music, as well as Enrico Dindo and Rocco Filippini for the cello technique.

He wins 33 national and international competitions in which he receives mainly the first prize. In 2004 he wins the first prize of the seventh edition of the international competition for violoncello in Lienzen (Austria). In 2006 he receives the first prize in the European cello competition “Arturo Bonucci” and the fifth prize in the international cello competition “Gyeongnam International Music Competition Isang Yun in memoriam” in Korea (member of the “Concours de Genève”).

Together with his wife Fulvia Mancini he is the artistic director of the “festival Regina Musica al Castello di Maenza, Latina”.
