I can remember my first screening of the completed film for a number of family and friends. Following the credit roll, I sat with the audience and witnessed them engage in a series of conversations surrounding various forms of contemporary injustices and their role in addressing them. The audience was a mature one, many who’d already spent much time involved in activist work. As I watched, I wondered how we might better engage young people in similar conversations. How could we get young people galvanized toward joining a much needed movement in this country to confront systemic injustice? When examining resistance movements of the past, those which were the most successful were those which engaged and depended upon the participation of the youth. How would we bridge the gap between 1831 & 2016 in a way that would allow young people to connect to Nat Turner’s legacy?
Music.
So much of pop culture is driven by music. The hope was by curating a group of the best contemporary artists to sonically express their feelings of the film, fans would recognize the connection and be curious to know more. Craig Kallman and I spoke with the artists, offering them a platform to address issues they otherwise may never have had the path to address. I believe what has emerged is a series of honest, unfiltered feelings regard- ing where we were, where we are and where we ultimately could be with the right collective disposition. I honestly couldn’t be more excited to share their Nat Turner inspired feelings and truths with the world.
