Lisa Anderson’s stunning voice pulls you into her show, but it’s her storytelling about an intensely lived life that enthralls as you connect with her silly, fierce, perky, and passionate music.
Anderson is a singer-songwriter from Calgary, Canada who traveled and lived around the world before finding herself back home reeling from heartbreak. It was here, a place she once felt like an outsider, where she delighted to discover the freedom to be herself, the determination to plunge into her music, and the chance for real love.
Her homecoming album, A Hundred Lives, reflects the struggles and the joys of embracing all life has to offer – the dark, the blissful, and the grey in between. Featuring Anderson on piano, singing in three languages, and playing the ukulele (she abandoned her guitar in Spain), the album journeys through the grief of her goodbyes – “I’ve lived a hundred lives and died a hundred more,” she sings in the title track – the ability to forgive a betrayal in the first single, “Barricade”, and the exhilaration of new romance in “All I Know”. “All I know is that my hands are home in yours/all I know is I’m myself at your side.” Her realistic optimism and quirky humour weave through her lyrics to form moments of kinship with her listeners.
Anderson captivates audiences around the world with her “beautiful and powerful voice,” as described by Pablo Garcinuño of Spain’s Los 4 Palos Blog. Anderson’s self-titled debut album was sponsored and promoted by Spain’s nation-wide radio network Los 40 Principales. She has performed in Spain, France, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Canada. “In a context that is so cynical, it is increasingly rare to come across an artist who knows how to innocently enjoy her passion, is driven only by the irrepressible need to cry out her emotions, and is still easily embarrassed by a sincere compliment,” Maurizio Grimaldi of Italy’s Info Oggi Blog.
Since returning to Calgary in 2015, Anderson won an honourable mention at the 2015 Calgary Folk Festival song writing competition for her song “Beautiful Night” and has received praise from the local community. “She is a total package entertainer,” says Lisa Dodd, CCMA award winner.
Anderson’s main influences are Regina Spektor, Ingrid Michaelson, Patrick Watson, St. Vincent, and Florence and the Machine. Her forthcoming album features Daniel Ruiz on drums and glockenspiel, Kevin Sullivan on bass, Brendan Waters on guitar and piano, Nicole Romeril on violin, Ben Longman on cello, André Wickenheiser on trumpet/flugelhorn, Carsten Rubeling on trombone, Mami Nishitani on piano, and Ben Nixon on mellotron. Collaborations include “Salvavidas” with lyrics by José Luis Sánchez Hernando and music by Lisa Anderson, "We Did What We Had To" with lyrics by Lisa Anderson and music by Lisa Anderson and Paul Orton, “Time is Running” with lyrics and music by Lisa Anderson and Ben Nixon, “Barricade” with lyrics by Ben Nixon and music by Lisa Anderson and Ben Nixon.
Ultimately, Anderson recognizes the wanderlust that inspires people to step out of their comfort zones in search of the human experience. Her combination of storytelling, self-deprecating humour, and quirky songs resonates as deeply as her voice.
