On Tuesday 9 April 2019, the CD ‘Songs of Heritage, Hope and Healing’ by Mantombi Matotiyana was launched at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective (TAAC) in Observatory, Cape Town.
This is the first CD to be launched by AOI. At the event, umam’ Matotiyana sang, and played uhadi and umrubhe. She was supported by fellow women musicians as well as by Prof Dizu Plaatjies, who also sang, danced, and played in the ensemble. The guest speaker, Prof Njabulo Ndebele, commented that the music recorded on umam’ Matotiyana’s CD made him feel ‘at home’, and that the music felt ‘in place’, ‘right, here’, and ‘from here’ – for us all to enjoy. He also noted how important it was to preserve and re-curate the music to which umam’ Matotiyana had dedicated her life’s musicianship. Other speakers on the evening’s programme included the CD’s executive producer, Prof Michael Blake, who spoke about the long-term working relationship that had developed between him and umam’ Matotiyana, and that led to the recording.
During the concert, Plaatjies provided information on the songs, sung in IsiXhosa. Pakama Ncume, sound archivist at AOI, and the host to the musicians for the afternoon’s rehearsal and the evening performance, held a short interview with umam’ Matotiyana as part of the programme. The English transcription and translation of their discussion is available below.
