When it has came down to the most influential divas of all time, many of them place them in a box. Some of the definitive standards showcased bravado & beauty from the soul within like the great Aretha Franklin, the definitive and soulful Whitney Houston or the sweet sounds of the vintage Ella Fitzgerald. Truthfully, there are also some divas that also do deserve to be in that pantheon, but people have forgotten about them too long. Natalie Cole is definitely a example of that. She had showcased 40 years of beautiful music ranging from R&B, to standards in jazz and pop. The daughter of the legendary Nat King Cole's music had been more or less forgotten about by today's divas like Rihanna, Adele & Beyonce', which have mostly left more overexposure than simplicity shine. Yet, to celebrate Natalie's music each and every time, I think of her best ballads that shine so brightly from the heart.
Love Essentials, is a condensed version of the 2007 Love Songs album Rhino records made for Natalie Cole's music. Considered that Concord records, home of the late Ray Charles' final album Genius Loves Company, acquired the rights to Natalie Cole's catalog recently and has re-released her music. The 13 track compilation does mostly showcase what the Love Songs album was, but with a few songs and standards ignored. The collection does have the bulk of the songs here though, in the same order from the 2007 collection. There are a lot of Natalie's greats here and a few underrated tracks like Miss You Like Crazy, Starting Over Again, the Everlasting comeback hit I Live For Your Love and Angel Of My Shoulder from Natalie's 1999 hits album. Yet, there are a few faults with the compilation. One was that it took off some of Natalie's biggest ballads like I've Got Love On My Mind and Inseparable. Also, Concord could've re-enhanced it by putting some of Natalie Cole's biggest standards on this collection like Unforgettable, her duet with Nat King Cole, Ask A Woman Who Knows or Someone That I Used To Know. There is a lot that could've been desired here, and misses the impression of Natalie's beloved soul.
