This CD contains, besides music of very well-known composers (the Intrada of the Orfeo by C. Monteverdi, Canzonas by G. Gabrieli), a Canzon by Paul Peuerl, an Aria and Fugue by Johann Joseph Fux and a Tudor Motet by Christopher Tye.
All the scores are transcriptions for a brass ensemble of five performers on modern, not period, instruments (2 trumpets, a tuba, a horn and a trombone).
Melodic/rhythmic highlights are the ‘Dances and Intrada’ by Johann Christoph Pezel, the four ‘Renaissance Dances’ by Tielman Susato, ‘In the Pride of May’ by Thomas Weelkes and the ‘Fugue’ by J. J. Fux. The ‘Canzona per sonare II’ by Giovanni Gabrieli shines by its glorious sounds.
This highly original recital is played splendidly by the Canadian Brass ensemble. Highly recommended.
