Augustin Hadelich is an Italian violinist. Born to German parents, Hadelich was raised in a musical family with two brothers who played cello and piano, while he took up the violin at age five. Hadelich developed into a prodigy, playing violin and piano and composing as a sideline. Hadelich suffered burns in a fire in 1999, which required treatment in Germany and more than a year of recuperation before he could play the violin again. He then graduated from the Instituto Mascagni in Livorno with honors, and studied with Joel Smirnoff at the Juilliard School, receiving his graduate diploma in 2005 and his artist diploma in 2007. In 2006, he won the International Violin Competition in Indianapolis, and began performing with such major orchestras as the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the San Francisco Symphony. He has also appeared internationally with the BBC Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, the Danish National Symphony, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Hamburg Philharmonic, and many others. He regularly performs the standard concerto repertoire, but he has promoted modern works by Thomas Adès, Henri Dutilleux, György Ligeti, Brett Dean, David Lang, György Kurtág, Toru Takemitsu, and Bernd Alois Zimmermann. Hadelich has recorded for Naxos and Avie, and was the soloist in Dutilleux's Sur le même accord on the Seattle Symphony label.
