La Selva morale e spirituale (littéralement « Forêt morale et spirituelle ») est un recueil de quarante œuvres sacrées de Monteverdi publié en 1641, donc deux ans avant sa disparition. L'ensemble du recueil, et plus particulièrement certaines pièces, notamment les deux Magnificat qu’il contient, présentent des similitudes avec les Vespro della Beata Vergine. À en croire la dédicace de l’édition originale, la Selva regrouperait des pièces composées par Monteverdi pour la cour du duc de Mantoue, mais dans la réalité, il s'agit plutôt d'une collation de partitions destinées à la cathédrale Saint-Marc de Venise, où Monteverdi fut maître de chapelle à partir de 1613. Le recueil réunit donc ses ouvrages sacrés majeurs sous forme de quasi testament artistique, considérant qu’à l'âge de soixante-quatorze ans, le compositeur savait qu’il devrait bientôt tirer sa révérence. L’extraordinaire richesse du recueil, qui alterne des genres et des formats très divers, représente vraiment un « compendium » des plus indispensables ; c’est ici le superbe ensemble britannique The Sixteen qui tient la barre, et avec maestria.
