The Ghost of Innocence is a story...
…about a pure, idealistic soul in a world that is not quite as perfect as he wishes it was. It’s a story about many of us.
The hero of the story, who we simply call ‘Child’, starts out very idealistic and conflicted, feeling the pressure of the world around him, reflecting on his place in it all, and finally resolving to stand apart and not lose his unique sense of self in a world he sees as spiritually deadening and generic.
But then something derails him; someone he clearly had entrusted his heart to shatters him, and he feels himself slipping away. Suddenly the world becomes cold and without shelter, as he desperately looks for anything true to cling to, but finds nothing left to hold on to. With broken heart and shattered trust, Child goes out on a safari of the underbelly of New York City, and lets all the grief and sadness he encounters wash away anything good that is left in him. It is there, in a final act of spiritual self-annihilation that Child takes a prostitute back to his place (ignoring her own desperate humanity, which he previously could never have done) and through their encounter puts the final nails in his own coffin of surrender.
The album concludes with a eulogy to Child. In it we see all he dreamed about, all he struggled to make pure in his pursuit of truth and nobility in life, and how it all died in a world that was not yet as pure as he was.
