Following the success of her previous Deutsche Grammophon recordings, Alice Sara Ott embraces two masterworks of piano literature: Beethoven's Sonatas in C major, reflecting different phases of the composer's life.
Both C major sonatas on this album have been in Alice Sara Ott's repertoire since her early teens and she feels that recording them now is testimony to her regard for Beethoven and of her ability to present a personal and artistic statement of these works
Sonata op. 2 no. 3, written when Beethoven was in his mid-twenties, is full of youthful spirit, wit, and force. The "Waldstein" op. 53 was composed in his thirties when Beethoven was struggling with impending deafness
Additionally, Alice Sara Ott selected the fierce Rondo "Rage over a Lost Penny," dating from Sonata op. 2's time, and the beautiful Andante favori, originally written as the "Waldstein"'s slow movement.
International Record Review:
“Ott’s Beethoven is beautifully cleanly played, with subtlety and sensitivity alongside plenty of power and personality. The pedalling is minimal, and the veiled tone in the finale of Op. 53 is especially effective through half-pedalling the long phrases as is marked but often ignored, Her finger legato is pristine and the musicianship is never in question. The technical demands are superbly accomplished and whilst these are full-blooded readings they are conspicuously unhurried.”
