Luca Benedetti, Tony Scherr & Tony Mason - We'll Get There (2019)

Guitarist Luca Benedetti calls his latest album We’ll Get There. It’s a phrase rich with meaning and it speaks to Luca’s journey developing his distinct compositional style and voice as a guitarist.

We’ll Get There alchemizes gritty New Orleans second line grooves, tough Chicago-style electric blues, vintage R&B, Afrobeat, downtown NYC punk-jazz, vibey soundtrack music, and trad-jazz guitar into a distinct sonic gumbo. It’s a sonic world that conjures the influences of Allen Toussaint, Earl Hooker, Fela Kuti, James Booker, Grant Green, Danny Gatton, Ray Price, and Jeff Beck, among others. Tying together this vibrant palette of influences is Luca’s command of tones which spans juke-joint rawness, spanky tele twang, and satiny clarity. For the album, Luca is backed by iconic bassist Tony Scherr (Norah Jones, Bill Frisell, Jesse Harris) and venerated drummer Tony Mason (John Scofield, Charlie Hunter, Joan Osborne). Together, the trio explores nine original Luca compositions in addition to an epiphanic reimagining of the standard “Stompin’ At The Savoy.” The album mines the compositional voice Luca established on his 2010 debut, Ta Da…,showcasing his growth as an imaginative improviser and thoughtful accompanist.
