Autosalvage were a psychedelic, Blues Rock, Avantgarde band, formed in New York, USA in the summer of 1966.
This group was started by Thomas Danaher, who was a folk and bluegrass freak, and Darius LaNoue Davenport, who came from a musical family. Lead guitarist Rick Turner, son of a poet and a painter, had worked with Ian and Sylvia and then a long line of rock groups. Bassist Skip Boone is the brother of Steve Boone, the bassist for the Lovin' Spoonful.
Despite rumors of being "discovered" and/or produced by Frank Zappa, the band and Zappa were only acquaintances. Autosalvage opened for The Mothers of Invention in 1967 at Andy Warhol's "Balloon Farm", an old Ukrainian Hall on St. Mark's Place in the East Village (which then later became "the Electric Circus"). The band was still performing as "The Northern Lights" but looking for a new name when Zappa suggested "Auto Salvage", a song of the band's that Zappa had a particular liking for. The band's sole album was with RCA released in January of 1968, produced by Bob Cullen and recorded in the RCA Studios in NY.
Boone and Davenport subsequently reappeared supporting the short-lived Bear and then as sessions players, including Terence Boylan’s 1969 solo album. Rick Turner went on to work with Jerry Corbitt and Jeffrey Cain. He later became a well-known guitar builder/repairer (notably for Ry Cooder).
