Rumpelstilz was founded in 1971 by Hanery Amman (piano) and Polo Hofer (vocals, lyrics), together with guitarist Jürg Werren, bassist Sämi Jungen and drummer Hans Jungen. Hans Jungen was replaced shortly after its founding by Küre Güdel, half a year later Jürg Werren by René "Schifer" Schafer.
As the first single appeared in 1973, the little successful Warehuus Blues, 1975 followed the first long-playing record Bird Feet. Bassist at the studio recordings was Christian Ramseier and keyboarder was Urs Wirth. Her appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1975 made Rumpelstilz known to a wider audience. With the song Teddy Bear succeeded in 1976, the commercial breakthrough, shortly after Kiosk was her biggest hit. Both singles are decouplers from the LP Füüf Narre in the Charre, which appeared in 1977 in High German translation as LP "Five fools in the cart". With the high German single kiosk Rumpelstilz was also known in Germany and reached the German charts in 1977.
In 1978, the fourth album, the double-LP fats u Bitze vo geschter u jits. One of the records also features the score for Kleine Kleine in the summer (Peter von Gunten), the second a live concert from Atlantis Basel. The members followed various solo projects and went their separate ways for more than ten years. In 1989 they gave three concerts, of which a very successful live album appeared. An acclaimed Swiss tour followed. After that, the band split up. Only in 2002 was there a single revival concert in the original formation on the occasion of Expo.02 in Biel.
Numerous Rumpelstilz songs have been covered, eg. From George (E rying day by the sea), plush (teddy bear), QL (kiosk), Span (Uf däm length Wäg) and others. Rumpelstilz are today regarded as pioneers of the Swiss dialect skirt. A part of the exhibition "Jungfrau, Hofer & Ragusa" from May 1, 2007 to January 6, 2008 in the Historisches Museum Bern was dedicated to the group.~google
