Combining wide varieties of pop and folk music into their own brass-kickin' roots rock sound, Sol Driven Train has carved out a unique identity within the American musical landscape. Like the 6-piece band’s hometown of Charleston, SC, their music is warm, approachable, and rooted in history. The sound is soulful and rich, like Southern food, and as diverse as you’d expect coming from a port city with historical ties to the Caribbean Sea, West Africa, and Europe. The band members share a deep musical history that can be traced back to the middle school band room, where founding members Ward Buckheister (trombone, guitar, vocals), Russell Clarke (saxophone, vocals), and Joel Timmons (guitar, vocals) first jammed together. Their tight vocal harmonies and conversational horn lines reveal a musical rapport that has spanned decades. The rock solid drumming of Wes Powers and the fluid syncopations of bassist Matt Thompson lay a rhythmic foundation that gets the crowd dancing. The band’s youngest member, Ross Bogan, nimbly ties the SDT sound together with swirly organ and jazzy piano licks sparkling across the rock-soul orchestra. When Sol Driven Train takes the stage, there is a palpable sense of brotherhood, mutual support, and creative independence.
The album, Sunday, arrives as the band is transitioning into a new chapter. After over a decade of full-time touring, it’s time for the individuals in Sol Driven Train to focus on other interests and opportunities. Recorded mostly live to 2” tape at Charleston Sound, there is a maturity and honesty in this record that is highlighted by the use of acoustic instruments and simple production. The familiar sunny optimism of Sol Driven Train is still present on the opening two tracks, “Riverside” and “Stuck in the Clouds,” but the album quickly turns into more pensive territory. You can hear the road-weary rasp in Ward’s vocal on “Last 100 Miles” as he sings about sleeping in parking lots and all night drives. “Grandaddy,” a post-apocalyptic bluegrass burner, raises the issue of our collective responsibility for climate change. “Yellow House” is an acoustic lament in 6/8 time on the toll that road life can take on relationships back home. The band also wrestles with death and letting go of loved ones on songs like “Take it Away,” “Black Rain,” and “Blue Eyes.” The somber tone of these tracks contrasts with the band’s 2015 release, Dance, a carefree party record that was toured extensively across the USA and Caribbean. A highlight of Sunday is Ross Bogan’s songwriting and lead vocal contributions. His beautiful piano playing is featured on an improvised prelude to the banjo-driven track, “Ghost.” “Wait” is the funkiest track on the record, laying 3 part harmony vocals over a slamming piano groove and syncopated horn and guitar interplay. “Ann Bonny”, a quirky sea shanty in odd time, is a tribute to that 17th century cross dressing pirate. “Miss You at Christmas” is a Willie Nelson-esque country tune remembering the old flames of holidays gone by.
Sunday is the sound of a road-tested band of American dreamers hitting their musical stride while weighing the costs of a life of rock n roll servitude. It pairs well with comfy chairs, contemplative cups of coffee, picnics, and road trips.
