The success of the Rosetti edition (twelve cpo CD volumes – and counting!) demonstrates not only that his music was extraordinarily popular during the late eighteenth century, when his compositions were included in concert programs throughout Europe, but also that it is very highly valued even today. Antonio Rosetti enabled the orchestral culture of his times to reach new heights. On this CD two of the three symphonies from his Opus 1 frame the late Piano Concerto in B flat major. Rosetti’s intelligent orchestration lends special force to the powerful sections of the concerto, which are marked by dynamic contrasts, and emotional depth enhances the sections of a more lyrical character. Harmonies of a mysterious quality, already anticipating early romanticism, open the slow second movement forming the musical centre of the work. Filled with gloomy pathos and rugged stretches, the G minor adagio verges on a dramatic stage scene. Rosetti’s two symphonies, like most of his earlier works, continue to be obliged to the style galant. His Symphony No. 2 op. 1 in particular creates great appeal from the very beginning. The initial eighth motive introduced each time by a chord beat and forward drive develops into a highly energetic, large-scope orchestral tutti. Johannes Moesus, the experienced conductor of the previous Rosetti releases, again leads the orchestra.
