Kan Wakan arrive with a striking breadth of vision that immediately places them among modern pop’s most beguiling and inventive new artists. The Los Angeles-based group’s extraordinary new album introduces their ornate amalgam of psychedelic soul, post rock, noir jazz, and orchestral pop, all reshaped and rearranged to create something startlingly original and utterly contemporary.
While Verve is known for being home to several jazz legends, Kan Wakan instead emanates from a musical background entrenched in classical minimalism. Bulgarianborn Gueorgui I. Linev (mastermind behind Kan Wakan) originally set out to create instrumental music inspired by his fascination with 60′s and 70′s film scores, namely compositions from the revered Jean-Claude Vannier, Ennio Morricone, and Phillip Glass. However, with the addition of vocalist Kristianne Bautista and producer/guitarist Peter Potyondy the group found itself evolving into the soulful orchestral-pop outfit that they are today.
The Los Angeles-based band recorded the collection with engineers Darrell Thorp (Radiohead, Gnarls Barkley, Atoms for Peace) and Tom Elmhirst (Arcade Fire, Beck, The Black Keys). It was mastered by Bob Ludwig (Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, Daft Punk).
