the Cree people have had this ceremonial gathering for centuries. It is a gathering primarily held during the winter moons when it is cold outside, or in the Cree Language kakisik(when it is cold). the gathering initially took place in people’s homes and was accompanied by the lifting of the pipe, by prayer and feasting. According to elder Marvin Littlechild (Maskwacis Cree) as told to him in stories by his elders, “It was a time to let go of all the negative energies in one’s body, mind, and soul, and replace it with good medicine from the song and drum. Many of our dances are exactly that, incorporating happiness into a person’s soul, mind and body.” today the round Dance has evolved and the dance is held during anytime of the year. the songs are also a good way of maintaining our languages within our youth. — Steve Wood on behalf of Northern Cree 2019
