Born Llandel Veguilla Malavé Salazar on January 14, 1978 and raised in Cayey, Puerto Rico, he began his career in 1995. He started Wisin & Yandel together with Wisin (Juan Luis Morera Luna) in 1998. Los Reyes del Nuevo Milenio, their debut, was released in 2000. The album's title ("kings of the new millenium") proved accurate: their nine studio albums have collectively sold more than 20 million copies.
By 2007, Yandel had consolidated his international presence with the duo, performing all over Latin America and the world. In 2012 and he was one of the coaches for The Voice Mexico and with Wisin, he sold out Radio City Music Hall and six nights at Madison Square Garden, as well as two sold-out dates at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Having been a bona fide superstar during a solid fifteen-year career, he took a new turn as a soloist. His first solo album, De Líder a Leyenda (November 2013), debuted at #1 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart and #9 on the Top Rap Albums chart, and was certified gold (Latin) by the RIAA in March 2014. His video numbers are in the hundreds of millions: his 2014 video, "Moviendo Caderas" featuring Daddy Yankee, has over 152 million views on Vevo as of this writing.
Yandel was the first Latin singer to be featured in ESPN Magazine's popular annual music issue (January 2014). In April of that year, his De Líder a Leyenda VIP Tour kicked off and successfully played through the summer to sold-out houses in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, McAllen (TX), Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Washington DC, New York, Orlando, and Miami. A second leg of the tour played to delirious crowds at large venues in Paraguay, Buenos Aires, the Viñas del Mar Festival and Santiago shows in Chile, Santo Domingo, Mexico City, Tampa, Las Vegas, Europe and in Yandel's home territory of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
