Formed in 1976 after blues musician Matt Taylor's second attempt at living in a commune (which to his credit was part of an effort at promoting environmentalism), Western Flyer was in Taylor's words "a unique experiment in Australian music". Taking on a more country-flavoured sound than his previous music projects, Western Flyer signed to Festival Records' prog and psych rock label Infinity, and produced two albums between 1977 and 1979, First Flight and Live To Survive!
Many of the songs recorded by Western Flyer were written by Matt Taylor with Brian Peacock during their time living on the commune.
After the two albums and several national tours including with Mike Nesmith, Taj Mahall, and others they broke up with expenses far outweighing takings.
