'Le Chant De Gregor Terror & The Calypso Gigolos' is the long player debut of Gregor Terror & The Calypso Gigolos. The band was founded in 2010 as a real calypso orchestra including horn and percussion section and marimba, but has meanwhile been scaled down to a six-piece band, and where Gregor Terror & The Calypso Gigolos originally performed a repertoire of calypso classics, meanwhile they've turned to writing their own songs in a style Gregor himself baptized calypso mambo noir and for which he collaborated with former Donkey Diesel bandmate Gunter Nagels. The lyricism of the songs on 'Le Chant De Gregor Terror & The Calypso Gigolos' is close to that of classical calypso, with many allusions, double meanings and satirical humor, but musically it all sounds a tad darker here and there ('Harvey', opener 'Welfare'), and in instrumental 'Lost', the combo even throws in some Latin influences for good measure. Even though in most of the songs on 'Le Chant De Gregor Terror & The Calypso Gigolos' Gregor sticks to a love theme ('Feeling Like A Fool', 'Maria', 'Spirit Of Love'), the track list also contains reality tunes like opener 'Welfare' (a song about unemployment and trying to survive on benefits) or 'Harvey', about the consequences of hurricane Harvey, which raged over the Caribbean in 2017 and leaving a trail of destruction behind. 'The Sour And The Sugaree', and closing track 'Spirit Of Love', are about as close as you can get to traditional calypso are, and for title track 'Le Chant Des Gigolos', Gregor even switches to French. 'Le Chant De Gregor Terror & The Calypso Gigolos' will only be made available on vinyl and is distributed by French calypso label Kaiso Records.
