Martha Argerich has been criticized (once in a while) for sacrificing the spirit of the music she performs for the sake of sheer virtuosity, for which she is mostly famous.
Not this time. As a person with a particular fondness for Schumann (maybe due to a mental illness, which, like Schumann, her family was no stranger to), she feels his music acutely and precisely.
This recording of Fantasia and Fantastic Pieces, made for a Sony predecessor label in Italy in 1976, offers a wealth of a typical Schumannesque melody and pomp. And, unlike many Argerich recordings, it is fairly suitable for a late-night listening as well. But rest assured, her astonishing technique is still on full display.
Martha Argerich's Schumann has soul, personality, and her typical tone "grain", too.
If you really like Schumann, this CD should be indispensable for you.
