Winner of the 2015 Tárrega Guitar Competition, João Carlos Victor brings us a captivating and imaginative programme with numerous transcriptions of his own and a première recording of music dedicated to him with Paulo Rios Filho’s dramatic Répéter. The music of John Dowland stands at the heart of this album, the mystery and melancholy of his chromatic fantasias providing moments of reflection between the theatricality of Rodrigo’s Invocación y Danza, Tárrega’s luminous mazurkas, and Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s brightly neo-classical Sonata.
„Born in northern Brazil, the winner of the 2015 Tarrega International Guitar Competition, João Carlos Victor, had moved to Europe to complete his education. He has since remained in Switzerland from where he is establishing a career that includes a particular interest in lute music played on a modern guitar. His debut disc programme sets out a broad spectrum of musical tastes, and I find him especially satisfying when faced with technical challenges, as in Rodrigo’s Invocacion y Danza, his strong right hand fingers injecting a feel of immense power before he enters the fast moving dance section. That brilliance continues in Repeter, specially written for him by the young Brazilian composer, Paulo Rios Filho, to demonstrate the many sides of an innate mastery of the instrument. More immediately tuneful, and requiring deft fingers on both hands, Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s title refers to its eighteenth century parentage in the two central movements, surrounded by music full of Mediterranean sun and happiness. Victor’s group of four Tárrega pieces are charmingly performed, and I do not doubt his sincerity in his Dowland group. Another outstanding talent and I hope this well-recorded disc is a stepping-stone to the international guitar scene.“ (David Denton David's Review Corner)
