The Austrian tenor, born in Vienna in 1978, is one of the most sought-after evangelists and Bach interpreters of his generation. After training as a church musician, he studied singing with Margit Klaushofer and Robert Holl in Vienna, he was a master student of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Nicolai Gedda and Christa Ludwig and is a laureate of Bach, Schumann, Mozart, Hilde-Zadek and Wigmore -hall competition.
Since his debut in 1998, he has performed as a concert, song and opera singer with works from all epochs in the great music centers of Europe, North America, Japan and the Middle East. In addition to regular concerts in the Vienna Musikverein and Konzerthaus as well as in the Philharmonies of Munich and Berlin, he is a guest at numerous festivals (styriarte, Salzburg Festival, Israel Festival, La Folle Journée, international Bach festivals). He performed under the direction of renowned conductors such as Sir Neville Marriner, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Andrew Parrott, Reinhard Goebel and Hans-Christoph Rademann z. B. with Israel Philharmonic, the Academy of Early Music Berlin, the Vienna Philharmonic or the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. Daniel Johannsen is also involved in several large-scale Bach cantata projects.
On stage is the lyrical tenor, the engagements for example at the Munich State Theater on Gärtnerplatz, the Leipzig Opera, the Volksoper Vienna, the Bonn Theater or led to the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival, with Mozart games, with works of the Baroque, the 20th century and the modern, but also in some operetta roles to experience.
Lieder evenings with the full range of German repertoire (but also with English and French compositions) form a focus in the work of the singer, who collaborates with pianists such as Simon Bucher, Charles Spencer, Burkhard Kehring, Graham Johnson and Helmut German. Schumann's "Dichterliebe" and the chamber music CD "Tenore & Traverso" with arias by J. S. Bach (awarded by the ORF) are currently available as solo albums. In addition, numerous other (including Carus, Sony, German Harmonia Mundi published) recordings as well as radio and television recordings document his artistic work.
In 2017/18, Daniel Johannsen will once again be a guest at the styriarte, the Saxon Staatskapelle, the Nederlandse Bachvereniging, the International Herrenchiemsee Festival and for the first time at the Gstaad Menuhin Festival. Concerts lead him to the Auditorio Nacional de Música Madrid, to the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie as well as to the new Dresden Kulturpalast. For the renowned J. S. Bach Foundation St. Gallen, he will record Bach's "Christmas Oratorio" as well as his "St. John Passion". The Volksoper Wien invited the singer for Count Almaviva's re-recording of Rossini's "Barber of Seville", and at the Tiroler Landestheater Daniel Johannsen will play the role of Nadir in Emanuel Schikaneder's Singspiel "Der Stein der Weisen, or: Die Zauberinsel" to be experienced.
