Homesick James was one of the last of the first generation Chicago Bluesmen to play an important part in American music history. He developed a self-taught style of slide guitar through playing in his teens. Little is known about his early life. He played with Yank Rachell, Sleepy John Estes, Blind Boy Fuller and Big Joe Williams as well as his cousin, Elmore James. Along with Muddy Waters, Howlin'Wolf, Little Walter and John Lee Hooker, he helped to lay the groundwork for rock and roll and shaped the form of all popular music to come. His passing in 2006 in his mid-nineties left a void in the blues world that will never be filled.
