The idea for GREGORIAN came about when the Hamburg music producer Frank Peterson visited the royal monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial in Spain in 1989. Walking through the medieval monastery and chateau listening to current music on his walkman, he found the inspiration for the sound experiment of mixing the ancient Gregorian music with modern light music.
Peterson realized the idea for the first time with Michael Cretu with the worldwide sound phenomenon Enigma. The first album MCMXC a.D. appeared in 1990 and became a worldwide success after only a short time. MCMXC a.D. was number 1 in 41 different countries and received 57 platinum and 45 gold medals and is considered the world's most successful German album of all time.
This success paved the way for GREGORIAN's idea to take it one step further and establish it as an independent music act. In 1999, with the first album "Masters Of Chant", Frank Peterson seamlessly continued the success of Enigma. Over the following years, GREGORIAN has been able to sell more than 10 million recordings worldwide with 17 CDs and 7 DVDs to date, achieving gold and platinum status in 24 different countries.
At least once a year, Frank Peterson roams through his extensive music collection in search of new repertoire. Because selecting the songs for a project like Gregorian requires a lot of tact and inspiration. "Not every song is suitable for the Gregorian Tone Scale," he explains, "so you have to be very careful when choosing Gregorian." So much the happier is it that Peterson's immense repertoire of ideas seems inexhaustible, and that his ingenuity knows no bounds are set. Meanwhile, the Gregorian Repertoire consists of almost 250 songs ranging from classical music by Carl Orff to pop standards of the last 40 years to contemporary rock acts like Metallica, Coldplay, U2 and even Rammstein.
But with Gregorian, it all comes together to form a unity, taking the listener to the timeless world of Gregorian chant with famous tunes in a completely new sound.
The individual creativity of Frank Peterson is also reflected in the concert productions of GREGORIAN. Peterson produces breathtaking shows in arenas, theaters and churches that thrill fans and critics in Europe, Asia, Middle East and Africa. More than 2.5 million visitors have watched GREGORIAN live at their concerts in 25 countries. 2013 was the most successful year to date for GREGORIAN with more than 150 sold-out concerts. For the first time the music project was also for 5 concert in China.
GREGORIAN Live is always an audiovisual spectacle and so it is compulsory that in 15 years to date there has not been a single Gregorian concert without standing ovations.
For producer and mastermind Frank Peterson, however, this is no reason to sit back. After 4 months of production, 2015 saw the final chapter of the Masters Of Chant Saga. "The Final Chapter" climbed to # 8 on the German album charts and the accompanying tour led GREGORIAN to more than 80 cities across Europe.
The end of 2017 released album "Holy Chants" is the latest work of the exceptional singer. Exceptionally wintery, GREGORIAN presents the most beautiful songs during the cold season. The Holy Chants Tour starts in November 2018.
Frank Peterson was born in 1963 in Hamburg. After a six-year stay in Munich, Madrid and Ibiza, he now works in Hamburg and Key Biscayne, Florida. Peterson is founder of GREGORIAN and owner of Nemo Studios and omeN Music Publishing.
In addition to GREGORIAN, Frank Peterson and others produced. artists Sarah Brightman, Andrea Bocelli, Enigma, Ofra Haza, Alannah Myles, José Carreras, Placido Domingo, Paul Stanley, Josh Groban, Tom Jones, Backstreet Boys, Marky Mark, Nevio and Sandra. He has also contributed to numerous compositions and productions of international film scores and advertising campaigns.
