Nikolai Lugansky, piano

Nikolai Lugansky's 2018 release on Harmonia Mundi of Rachmaninov's 24 Preludes consists of the two sets of the Preludes, Op. 23 and the Preludes, Op. 32, but opens with the most famous (or infamous) of all of his solo keyboard pieces, the Prelude in C sharp minor. Originally published in Morceaux de fantaisie, Op. 3, the Prelude in C sharp minor has always seemed to exist independently from the others in the series, and early on became a greatest hit for Rachmaninov; yet because he was always obligated to play it as an encore at his concerts, he came to resent its extraordinary popularity and considered it an albatross. Even today, the Prelude in C sharp minor is likely the first track listeners will choose, though the full series of Preludes should be heard in its entirety to judge the full scope of Rachmaninov's invention and Lugansky's expressive power. There are other Preludes to claim listeners' attention, such as the martial Prelude in G minor, Op. 23, No. 5, which has almost matched the Prelude in C sharp minor in popularity, and the Prelude in G flat major, Op. 23, No. 10, which is one of the most poignantly beautiful. Lugansky displays great flexibility in his interpretations, showing a feeling for each piece's distinctive character and modesty in playing the Preludes on their own terms, and not merely as showpieces for his prodigious technical abilities. Harmonia Mundi's transparent recording is close to the piano, so every detail is audible, and the frequency range is quite wide, allowing for proper dynamic contrasts.
