Although Igor Stravinsky and Dmitri Shostakovich were contemporary Russian composers, their lives stood in distinct contrast to each other: the former was outgoing and sophisticated; the latter an introverted melancholic. Their outputs were similar, however, in that they were both deeply rooted in their homeland, Stravinsky's drawing on its wealth of traditional myths and folk customs, while Shostakovich fed on the fearful, historical events that shook Russia to its core. Cornelius Meister, recently named Conductor of the Year by Opus Klassik, the German classical music awards body, interprets these different sound worlds with colour, clarity and authority, drawing superb performances from the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.
