Led by a core trio of Davy Woodward (vocals, guitar), Chris Gavin (bass) and Bob Morris (drums), Bristol’s Brilliant Corners began in 1983 as sort of rockabilly/ psychobilly band. It’s still unclear why, however, as they were clearly much more at home in the indie-pop territory they came to inhabit.
Released in a run of 500 on their own SS20 imprint in early 1984, the Corners’ debut single, She’s Got Fever, has become something of a Holy Grail for fans, as many of the original copies were damaged after being glued into their homemade sleeves. A further five singles and two LPs followed, resulting in three Top 20 singles entries and 1986’s What’s In A World album cracking the Top 10 – notably 1987’s Brian Rix, a homage to the maestro of farce, proceeds from which were donated to the Mencap charity where Rix was Chairman.
To celebrate their 30th anniversary, Heart On Your Sleeve collects all the band’s singles, from both SS20 and their later McQueen imprint, with previously unreleased demos, live tracks and sleevenotes by Woodward.
