A powerful tentet consisting of 6 wind instruments (3 saxophones/bass clarinets, 2 trumpets, tuba) and a rhythm section with an electric/electronic touch (rhodes/synth, guitar, doublebass, acoustic drums and a drum machine, electronics and various effects).
The album features original compositions and a weird, cubistic, stretched, almost unrecognizable version of "Giant Steps".
The compositional material proposed by Scardino is the synthesis of many elements of personal research in recent years: polyrhythmia, extremes, long themes, small cells, obsessive repetition, polychords, the eternal crossover between the so-called genres.
The listener will also find some smoking groovy solos as well as moments of cathartic collective improvisation.
The recording took place in a church (Chiesa di Sant'Andrea, Pisa).
We had a 3 day residency produced by Pisa Jazz: we reharsed, recorded everything and played a concert.
We also recorded the concert, but only one track of the live performance (the first) ended up here, so despite the title, this is not an entirely live record.
Sound-wise this church has great quality for lower dynamics, but for higher ones (there's plenty of them) a lot of work had to be done in order to dry the whole sound out.
The result is a very enjoyable and focused sound: depth, clarity without having to give up a touch for the nice church reverb.
Beppe Scardino - baritone sax, bass clarinet, compositions
Dan Kinzelman - tenor sax, bass clarinet
Piero Bittolo Bon - alto sax, bass clarinet
Mirco Rubegni - trumpet
Mirko Cisilino - trumpet
Glauco Benedetti - tuba
Gabrio Baldacci - guitar
Simone Graziano - fender rhodes, synth
Gabriele Evangelista - doublebass
Daniele Paoletti - drums, electronics
