“Roma – Motion Picture Soundtrack” (19 tracks; 61 min.) opens with Leo Dan’s “Te He Prometido”, one of the many local tunes from the late 60s/very early 70s that are such a joy to hear. in fact all but 4 of the tracks are Mexican tunes so if you are ‘bothered’ by this type of music, then by all means you are looking at the wrong album collection. What really is apparent is how the late 60s/early 70s vibe comes through also on these very local recordings. Check out Rotio Durcal’s “Mas Bonita Que Ninguna”, and later on Rigo Tovar’s “Gracia”. By the time we get to tack 7, we get to hear some of the non-local tunes, and if you are a certain age, you will recognize them: Christie’s “Yellow River”, and then Yvonne Elliman’s “I Don’t Know How to Love Him”, from the Jesus Christ Superstar “rock opera”, which original album was released in the Fall of 1970 and was an immediate smash in North America, including Mexico (or certainly in the upper circles). Amazing. (The song plays at a party the family is attending.) Later on we get to the other two non-local songs: Roger Whittaker’s hit “Mammy Blue” (I hadn’t heard this in decades, but immediately recognized it when it played), and how can you have a 1970-71 soundtrack without a tune from Ray Conniff and the Singers, omni-present in that era? Here we get their version of ”Those Were the Days”, another tune that I hadn’t heard in forever. We then go back to more local tunes, including such gems as Lupita D’Alessio’s “Mi Corazon Es Un Gitano” (“My Heart Is a Gypsy”), and Angelica Maria’s “Cuando Me Enamoro”. It was a revelation to be exposed to these songs, as admittedly I wasn’t familiar with many of them.
As to the movie itself, there is a lot of buzz about this movie (including TIME’s Movie of the Year, among many other accolades), but it wasn’t until I saw it recently at my local art-house theater here in Cincinnati that I finally understood why there is such positive buzz about this movie. Writer-producer-photographer-editor-director Alfonso Cuaron (whom we last saw winning multiple Oscars for “Gravity”) takes a step back to look at his upbringing in an upper-middle-class household with live-in maids. The movie’s central character is one of those maids, and what you will see on the big screen will move you, I am quite certain. I had already made my “best movies of 2018” list, but it is very clear to me that “Roma” is the BEST MOVIE of the year, period (and hence I updated my year-end list). Bottom line: “Roma”, both the soundtrack and the movie, is a WINNER all the way.
