Seit 2012 sind sie wieder unterwegs: Kevin Rowland und DEXYS, die in den achtziger Jahren als Dexys Midnight Runners eine ganze Generation zum ausgelassenen Tanzen brachten. Im Juni erscheint ihr brandneues Album Let The Record Show Dexys Do Irish & Country Soul, das das erste Studioalbum seit dem 2012er One Day I’m Going To Soar ist. Mit Let The Record Show… schlagen sie ganz neue Wege ein und knüpfen doch direkt an ihre große Zeit in den 80ern an. Denn mit einer herzerfrischenden Sammlung von Irish & Countrysongs verwirklicht Bandleader Kevin Rowland einen Traum, den er seit Mitte der Achtziger verfolgt und nie aufgegeben hat.
Let The Record Show Dexys Do Irish & Country Soul ist ein Herzensprojekt Rowlands, in dessen Songs er seine ganze Seele gesteckt hat. Vor dem Hintergrund der irischen Abstammung Rowlands und des Bandmitglieds und Co-Producers Sean Read, kehren sie zurück zu ihren irischen Wurzeln und präsentieren eine Kombination aus eigenständigen Interpretationen von irischen Songs und anderen ausgewählten Kompositionen. Jedem Song wurde dabei die volle Hingabe der Band zuteil, als wären es Eigenkompositionen. Let The Record Show… ist weder ein Lückenfüller noch eine Notlösung. Es ist auch alles andere als ein Cover-Album!
„Wir tragen die Idee dieses Albums schon seit 1984 oder 1985 mit uns herum“, so Rowland. „Es sollte damals den Titel Irish bekommen und Songs wie Carrickfergus, Curragh Of Kildare und Women Of Ireland enthalten, die nun auch tatsächlich alle auf dem Album sind. DEXYS lösten sich aber vorher auf, und so ist es damals nie zu diesem Album gekommen.“
„All die Jahre habe ich immer wieder daran gedacht“, fährt er fort. „Die Idee war nie ganz untergegangen. Ich kann mich an 10 oder 12 Jahre erinnern, in denen ich dachte ‚Wenn ich Carrickfergus mache, könnte ich dies oder das probieren‘. Oder vielleicht könnten wir You Wear It Well aufnehmen, denn die Idee entwickelte sich bald von der Vorstellung weg, nur irische Songs zu spielen, hin zu einem Konzept, auch andere Songs aufzunehmen, die ich liebe und immer mal einspielen wollte. Ich hatte dieses Album immer in Hinterkopf. Und als wir uns darauf vorbereiteten, One Day I’m Going To Soar aufzunehmen, traf mich aus dem Nichts der Pfeil der Inspiration, ein starkes und klares Gefühl, dass dieses unser nächstes Projekt werden sollte.“
„Das Album heißt bewusst Dexys DO Irish & Country Soul, und nicht BECOME“, betont Rowland. Wir versuchen nicht, irisch zu sein und wir haben nicht viele keltische Instrumente benutzt. Es hat nach wie vor unseren eigenen Sound und wir bringen unseren Stil in diese Songs ein. Ich bin ein Typ, der seiner Intuition folgt, meinen eigenen Inspirationen. Und dieses Album fühlte sich richtig für mich an. Viellicht haben wir sogar mehr Sorgfalt und Aufmerksamkeit in diese Songs gesteckt, als wir es normalerweise für unsere eigenen getan hätten, denn es war durchaus ein Risiko. Es war wichtig, es gut hinzukriegen und sicher zu gehen, dass jeder der Songs wichtig für uns ist.“
Zum Album Let The Record Show Dexys Do Irish & Country Soul wird es überdies keine Tour und keine Gigs geben. Stattdessen stehen einige Events an: Als britische Iren in zweiter Generation sind Rowland und Read stolz darauf, an zwei historischen Events teilzunehmen, die Teil des Ireland 2016 Cetenary Programme zur 100-Jahr-Feier der Proklamation der Irischen Republik im Jahr 1916 sind: Am 29. März werden sie in der National Concert Hall und am 29. April in der Royal Festival Hall, beide in Dublin, auftreten.
Diese Festivitäten gehen weit über die formellen Feiern eines historischen Schlüsselmoments hinaus. Es ist eine in einem Jahrhundert einmalige Einladung an Angehörige des irischen Volkes jeden Alters, ob in Irland geblieben oder nach Übersee ausgewandet, an großen und vielfältigen historischen, kulturellen und künstlerischen Aktivitäten teilzunehmen, die zu Ehren einer Generation stattfinden, deren Ideale eine Inspiration für alle kommenden Generationen sind. Das Programm soll Reflektionen, Erinnerungen, Zelebrierungen, Debatten, Analysen und aktive Ideenfindungen für die Zukunft anregen.

<#!EN!#>The album is a body of work which sees Dexys putting their heart and soul into every track that Kevin Rowland has wanted to do since the mid-1980s. Drawing on Rowland and co-producer/core band member Sean Read’s Irish roots, the album is a combination of their interpretations of Irish songs and other select compositions. Each song has been given at least the same level of attention and care as any of their own songs would be. This record is not a stop gap, or a fill in album. It is not a covers album.
“We had the idea to do this album in 1984 or 1985,” says Rowland. “It was to be called Irish and was to feature songs like ‘Carrickfergus’, ‘Curragh of Kildare’ and ‘Women Of Ireland’ – all of which are featured here. Dexys broke up not too long afterwards, so it didn’t happen.”
“Over the years, I would often think about it,” he continues. “The idea of it never went away. I can recall 10 or 12 years ago thinking, for example, ‘If I do ‘Carrickfergus’, I can try this or that.’ Or maybe we can do 'You Wear it Well’, as the brief had expanded from solely consisting of Irish songs, to songs I’ve always loved and wanted to record. The album was always at the back of my mind. Then just as we were getting ready to record ‘One Day I’m Going To Soar’, I had an inspirational bolt from the blue, a strong clear feeling that this album should be our next project.'
“The album is called Dexys DO Irish & Country Soul: DO it, not BECOME it,” he emphasises. “We’re not trying to be Irish, and we haven’t used too many Celtic instruments on there. It’s our sound. We’re bringing our style to these songs. I’m just a guy who follows my intuition, my inspiration. This really felt like the right thing to do. We have put probably more care and attention into these songs than we might have done with our own songs, because the odds were high. It was important to get them right, and make sure every one of them felt relevant to us.”
