Based on the limited liner notes for Blue Moments (Quinton), I’m guessing that Sabina Hank is a 20-something, British-born singer-pianist working in Germany or Austria. Her age and where she hails from are, however, immaterial. All you need to know is that she has a stunning voice and a superb jazz sensibility. Imagine the clarity and precision of Doris Day or Jo Stafford mixed with the distingue allure of Everything But the Girl’s Tracey Thorn and you come close to understanding Hank’s sizable appeal. She’s also a terrific keyboardist and, based on the seven original compositions included in this 11-track collection, a formidable songwriter. Her “More Than a Friend” is, for instance, a hauntingly beautiful examination of satisfying, if less than ideal, love, while “Silent Tears” is a vibrant salute to personal redemption. Hank also delivers a wonderfully outre “Caravan,” a rich, fulfilling “For All We Know” and a delightfully ebullient “On the Street Where You Live.” Before too long, some clever A&R executive is going to sign Hank to a major label deal. When it happens, Diana Krall might be facing some stiff new competition.~ Christopher Loudon
