Jack Dupree was one of the barrelhouse champions. Weaned on the coarser piano styles of the brothels and speakeasies of his New Orleans youth, Dupree’s utilitarian approach to the instrument always favored infectious grooves over technical virtuosity. What set him apart from the legion of juke joint pianists were his endearing voice and his authenticity – he lived and breathed the life recounted in his colorful lyrics.
This quintessential CD includes two of Dupree's finest albums for the Atlantic label: the masterwork debut LP Blues from the Gutter (1958), plus the equally splendid follow-up, Natural & Soulful Blues (1960), which featured such stalwart British bluesmaen as Alexis Korner on guitar and Jack Fallon on bass.
