Joshua Breakstone - The Music Of Bud Powell

With an eloquent tribute to Monk under his belt, Joshua Breakstone turns his attention to another of bop's great pianists, Bud Powell, on his third Double-Time outing. His triomates are bassist Earl Sauls and drummer Keith Copeland. An understated yet incredibly fluid bop stylist, Breakstone displays a thorough mastery of Powell's compositions, from early classics like "Tempus Fugit" and "Un Poco Loco" to later works like "Comin' Up" and "The Scene Changes." Other highlights include a wonderfully laid-back "Celia" (dig the "Merry Little Christmas" quote) and the beautiful ballad "Time Waits," on which Breakstone's custom Carl Barney guitar truly sings. ~ David R.
