“IBERIA – Manuel d’Oliveira, Jorge Pardo & Carles Benavent”
Press Release:
Manuel d’Oliveira, an exceptional guitarist, lends reflections of the Iberian soul that runs through his veins to his compositions, without concealing respect and timeless devotion for his origins and traditions.
With a vast international career path, Manuel d’Oliveira has been confirmed by the critics as one of the most promising contemporary guitarists. He has already had an international publication - Amarte – for the record label Harmonia Mundi in 2007 and has participated in some of the most important European festivals, such as Emociona Jazz!! in Madrid (Spain), and Couleurs Jazz in Tourcoing (France), alongside names such as Brad Mehldau, Chic Corea, Mike Stern, Richard Galliano, among others.
Manuel d’Oliveira is getting back together with Carles Benavent and Jorge Pardo, historical Flamenco Jazz musicians. During their careers, Benavent and Pardo have played with names like Paco de Lucia, Miles Davis, Chic Corea, Pat Matheny, among many others.
Ibéria, his first recording of original material is the basis for this reunion. By way of a retrospective, the three musicians are now joining up, not only to celebrate their previous experience together, but also to build on new musical work, opening a new outlet for Iberia which will be on the road until 2014.
Iberia Dez anos – Manuel d’Oliveira, Jorge Pardo & Carles Benavent, was the generic title for the concert that was staged on 14th July last in the city of Guimarães, European Capital of Culture 2012, a commemorative concert, which was sold out and recorded on DVD.
“IBERIA – Manuel d’Oliveira, Jorge Pardo & Carles Benavent”
Synopsis:
Iberia, the geometric melting pot of cultures and people, is materialized on stage through the fusion of sounds and the triangle of a common and shared imagination.
As a geographic area, Iberia was and is the present and future sense of a blend of cultures, which on stage – that magical place – turns passion, technical ability and creativity into united moments, a synthesis of languages, involving three extraordinary musicians, three languages, three personalities.
Ten years on, they are back to build on new musical compositions, new journeys to the very ends of an Iberian culture that these three musicians and composers share, without limits or boundaries.
Accompanying them will be Filipe Raposo on piano and synthesizers, Joaquim Teles on percussion and João Frade on the accordion.
This reunion of Manuel d’Oliveira, Jorge Pardo & Jorge Pardo is emerging as a new chapter in a collaboration that brought about a friendship and led them to perform various concerts in Portugal and Spain.
That is how this fusion, this triangle of sounds from the Iberian imagination with different musical styles touching on fado, jazz, flamenco and popular Portuguese music, will give birth to feelings, mastery and the most unexpected dialogues conceived by these three musicians, multi-racial in their way of composing and united by the most universal of all human expressions.
Isabel Carvalho.
