Radio Jarocho plays son jarocho, the rowdy, upbeat, and at times melancholic music of the countryside of Veracruz, Mexico, and gives it a decidedly urban twist. A combination of Spanish, Afro-Caribbean, and Mexican indigenous music, son jarocho is customarily played in the fandango, a community celebration where people gather to play, sing, and dance. Since 2008, Radio Jarocho has helped promote and preserve son jarocho and the fandango tradition throughout the East Coast. Having recently joined forces with master jarana player and poet Zenen Zeferino, they deliver performances that are passionate, energetic, and true to the roots of the genre. “Rios de Norte y Sur” is their first full-length studio production together. A combination of traditional songs and new compositions, the poetry and music of “Rios de Norte y Sur” is evocative of the bodies of water that connect New York and Veracruz, and that know no borders, walls, or frontiers.
