Yes, Belgian conductor Philippe Herreweghe first made his name and is probably still best known for his performances of pre-Classical choral music. Yes, the Royal Flemish Philharmonic is a contemporary instrument ensemble that has naturally specialized in post-Classical orchestral music. And yes, Herreweghe has concentrated on post-Classical orchestral music since 1991 and, as music director of the Flemish Philharmonic since 1998, has led that ensemble through a thorough re-examination of the standard post-Classical orchestral repertoire. In this disc coupling Beethoven's Fourth and Seventh symphonies, Herreweghe and the Belgian players turn in performances that are light but strong, subtle but vital, tender but humorous, lyrical but dramatic. The Fourth is the musical embodiment of Schumann's Grecian maiden with elegant lines, graceful rhythms, and a serene expression. The Seventh is the musical embodiment of Wagner's apotheosis of the dance with brilliant colors, massive sonorities, and irresistible rhythms. This disc promises to be the first in a complete cycle of Beethoven's symphonies with Herreweghe and the Flemish Philharmonic and one can only hope the rest are as well done. Talent's digital sound is rich, ripe, and warm. -- James Leonard
