From in to Out is a live set from what was probably a one-off group of Dizzy Reece on trumpet, John Gilmore (doing a bit of freelancing on an Arkestra tour of Europe) on tenor, Siegfried Kessler on piano, and a rhythm section of Patrice Caratini on bass and Art Taylor on drums. Side one has a very Coltrane-esque feel, thanks mostly to Kessler's McCoy Tyner-isms and the driving rhythms of Art Taylor. Presumably without much rehearsal time, they basically set up a groove and blow. Reece solos first, followed by Gilmore and Kessler, before moving into a brief unaccompanied bass solo. Side two has the band shifting into an odd-meter groove, strongly reminiscent of "Dancing Girls" from Pete La Roca's Turkish Women at the Bath (another rare foray outside the Arkestra for Gilmore). About halfway through the second side, the band heads back to Trane territory to close out the set. Overall, this is an excellent, well-recorded set, even if it's nothing groundbreaking or earth-shattering. Highlights are the great drumming of Art Taylor and another fairly rare chance to hear John Gilmore operating outside of Sun Ra's music.
