We miss Pete Seeger already – unless you live under a rock, you’ve received the news of his passing on Monday, at the age of ’94 – but our pals over at Big O Zine have stepped up to help mitigate the pain of the loss.
It’s a concert from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, on Oct. 25, 1956, in which Seeger teamed up with bluesman Big Bill Broonzy for a rousing performance. In the Big O commentary we learn:
Some songs from this tape (12 tracks) MIGHT have been released on the long OOP Verve-Folkways album FV-9008 “Pete Seeger & Big Bill Broonzy In Concert” (which lists the same venue and year, but not the exact date). If so, Moe Asch of Folkways might have taken excerpts from this tape and released them with or without permission (just as he “bootlegged” Woody Guthrie’s RCA Dust Bowl recordings on Folkways)…
This, in my opinion, is one of the best recordings of a complete Pete Seeger concert of the 1950s, with the added bonus of one of the last public performances of blues legend Big Bill Broonzy [who passed away in 1958 at the age of 65] and deserves to be spread and preserved in its entirety. And from where I seed this torrent, even the aforementioned long-out-of-print official album (IF it contains any recordings from this very concert/tape which I was not able to ascertain) has already entered Public Domain…
