With a guitar phrasing that marks the current brazilian music, André Sampaio is publicly known as the guitarist and composer of the reggae band Ponto de Equilíbrio.
Its influences blues and jazz have merged to the Mandingo guitar adding his experiences and researches during his travels in Brazil, Europe and Africa playing with famous names of the musical scene. After a tour in Portugal with a group formed by the biggest names of the Afro-European scene and several trips to Africa between Mali, Burkina Faso and Mozambique, André Sampaio completed his solo work a year after the launch of its first EP "Bumaye!".
This is Mandingo music (Mandingo people of Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Senegal) mixed with afrobeat, drums terreiros, dub, samba and all the musical influences that are part of his 12 years of career and form the musical identity and striking impression of the guitar in his compositions and performances.
The launch of the first album of Andre Sampaio & Os AfroMandinga describes the dialogue between traditions of the African matrix and modern music with electrified instruments, in a language that mixes afrobeat, samba-rock and dub with songs and expressions inspired by songs of capoeira Angola, samba de terreiro, candomblé, griots’ songs, nyabinghi and bluesmen from Mississippi.
In an atmosphere dub, which refers to the psychedelism of the 60s and 70s, the musical universe that surrounds this young but experienced carioca artist merges from afro slopes, with the guitar as a catalyst instrument. While maintaining an elegant harmony of elements and tones with great intensity, the music that comes out of his strings is a music that comes from the soul and transports us from the ancestors to the present time. This is a dialogue between the traditional and the modern. The artist stands out the alternative scene of Rio de Janeiro. He recently made two shows: one at the People's Summit (Cúpula dos Povos) during the Rio+20 and the other one at the festival Santa Música - Lapa (music festival in Rio de Janeiro). He also had a significant impact during the Fela Day in Rio de Janeiro at the Circo Voador where the public came out in ecstasy, singing and dancing until the latest music which surprised many people who did not yet know anything about Mandingos’ music.
With a background that includes performances in the country and abroad and with music that is broadcasted on the radio and the World Music programs abroad, the shows of André Sampaio & Os AfroMandinga are marked by the quality music and a lot of positive energy shared with the public.
As he says himself: "solta a mandinga!" (let the Mandingo flows out of you!)
