06. Mozart: Piano Quartet No. 2 in E Flat Major, K. 493-3. Allegretto (Live At Pierre Boulez Saal)
When he wrote his two unique quartets with piano, violin, viola and cello, respectively in 1785 and 1786 - the time of the Marriage of Figaro - Mozart brilliantly inaugurated a genre that, much later, had to make some emulators and not Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Dvořák and Fauré, Saint-Saëns and Chausson. Not the big crowd therefore, because it is true that the format poses many problems of equilibrium, problems that Mozart overcame with his usual mastery (the others too, rest assured). Because the risk and the temptation are considerable to make of it a sort of mini-concerto for piano with accompaniment of three strings, which the composer carefully avoided; yes, he often opposes the piano to the three strings, but the exchange remains very balanced and never the strings are there to serve as sole support. In this, Mozart is the true forerunner. At the piano, Daniel Barenboim has surrounded himself with three musicians from his famous East-West Divan Orchestra: the son Michael B. on violin, the Russian violist Yulia Deyneka and the Persian cellist Kian Soltani, great soloists whose n did not wait for the number of years to bloom. Recordings made in public concert in March 2017, let us specify it.
