Though it's impossible to comprehensively catalogue the musical nuances of a scene as diverse as mod--even across four CDs--the lavishly packaged box set The In Crowd, which comes complete with glossy booklet, makes a highly commendable stab at it. The "ace face" fraternity will probably sneer at the preponderance of over-familiar cuts, but these 100 tracks are a near-perfect introduction to the UK's most enduring youth cult. Berry Gordy's nascent Motown label was a touchstone for the mod movement and is well represented here, as is its equally influential counterpart, the grittier more groove based Atlantic. It's not all US soul here however. There are also generous smatterings of ska, blues, jazz and R&B. Not to mention a pretty definitive roll call of original Brit-mod combos. All in all, The In Crowd is guaranteed to float the boating blazer of any self-respecting boy (or girl) about town. The weekend starts here.
