asger kudahl works in the terrain between music, field recording and sound design. the first solo-LP released under his own name sketches for revolution incites a mode of listening which opens up a space for the listener’s sensory apparatus and imagination.
sketches for revolution consists of electroacoustic compositions – distributed over six tracks. their complex rhythmic structures and enchanting soundscapes were created on modular synthesizer and has the same focuses on sensuousness and tactility which is also reflected in asger kudahl’s work with sound for theater. the album is an elaboration on pieces made for the performance the vampire revolution – a collaboration between the royal danish ballet’s experimental dance company corpus and director christian lollike – which was a mixture of modern dance and political theater.
though initially intended for a different context, sketches for revolution bears the mark of artists such as david lynch, cliff martinez, and steve reich. It reveals a dark sonic universe, that explores the sound of oscillators, unpredictable sequencing, and carefully constructed formations of noise. with his compositions asger kudahl paints a dystopian and distorted image of a not too distant future which it is left for the listener to dream up images for. because what does it entail for the imagination when the visual part of an artwork is omitted and the listener is left with only the sonic expression?
asger kudahl is a sound designer and co-founder of resonans recordings. he has created music and scores for theater performances, vinyl releases of field recordings and podcasts. more profoundly than any of his previous releases sketches for revolution ties together his theater-related work with his work as a musician, making it his most idiosyncratic work.
