In a five-year career as a solo and collaborative classical pianist, Shi-An has been engaged by the following presenters: Chapelle Historique du Bon-Pasteur, Frequency Series, Innovations en Concert, Cathédrale Christ Church, Harris Theater, Pianoforte Salon Series, Cliff Dwellers Club, Green Mill Jazz Club, Center for New Music, Musée de Beaux-Arts de Montréal, Kim Kashkashian’s Music For Food, Equilibrium Concert Series, Institute for the Public Life in the Arts and Ideas, Fifth Floor Collective, Fulcrum Point New Music Project, and Experimental Sound Studio; performances, lectures and masterclasses at the following educational institutions: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Univ. of Chicago, Brandeis Univ., Northwestern Univ., Univ. of Michigan, Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, Univ. of Toronto, Hollins Univ., Univ. of Nebraska-Kearney, Lake Forest College, Boston Conservatory, Carlton Univ., and Univ. of Calgary.; guest artist at the following festivals: Ear Taxi Festival (Chicago), Laboratoire de Musique Contemporaine de Montréal (Montréal), Women Composer’s Festival of Hartford, Scotia Chamber Music Festival (Halifax), and Under the Radar (Omaha); with new music groups Dal Niente, International Contemporary Ensemble, Warhol Dervish, Tak, Architek, McGill Percussion Ensemble, Callithumpian Consort, Ensemble Mise-En, Morton Feldman Chamber Players, and Thin Edge New Music Collective; with orchestras Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal, Boston Modern Orchestra Project and Toronto, Missouri, Salt Lake, Honolulu, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, and Lake Shore Symphony Orchestras.

As a composer, Shi-An has been performed by International Contemporary Ensemble, Dal Niente, ThingNY, Timepoint Ensemble, Thin Edge New Music Ensemble, soloists including Ben Reimer, Sandra Shen, Francis Yun, Marina Kifferstein and Sebastian Huydts. They have received commissions from Palomar Ensemble, Sarah Albu’s Trickpony, and Brianna Matzke and Hajnal Pivnick’s On Behalf Response Project. Shi-An’s music has been performed throughout Canada, the U.S and Europe.

In addition to music, Shi-An has steadily developed a career as a writer and actor over the past few years. Since 2015, they performed with TUTA Theater group, The LivingRoom, Northbrook Theatre for Young Audiences, and independent shows at the Frequency Festival and the Chicago Fringe Festival, at venues such as Victory Gardens, Stage 773, and the Chicago Cultural Center; And as a writer, since summer of 2016, Shi-An has contributed articles to FOCI Arts, chicshifter, Riksha, Performance Response Journal, NewMusicBox, Family Court Nightmares, and the Media/Communications team at Asian Americans for Advancing Justice-Chicago. They joined the writing team at Cacophony Magazine in Fall of 2017. As a writer, Shi-An is interested in articulating politics, activism and law as performance.

Shi-An holds a Bachelor’s degree from Columbia College magna cum laude, and an M.Mus from Schulich School of Music at McGill University. Shi-An is also trained in Meisner technique and Viewpoints at Chicago Black Box acting studio. They taught as a visiting artist in the composition department of Boston Conservatory in 2013-14, and joined the adjunct piano faculty of New Music School in 2014. They have worked as a vocal accompanist at Interlochen Center for the Arts, First Unitarian Church of Evanston, St. Lawrence Anglican Church of Montreal, the Opera Program of North Park University, and as a staff accompanist for the percussion area at McGill University's Schulich School of Music.
